Militia? Really?

Greetings,

An interesting question was posed at the NRA Women's Leadership Forum.  When was the last time US Citizens acted as a 'militia'?  One woman guessed the Civil War aloud, and the rest mostly sat silently pondering.

The answer?  9-11-2001.

There were folks on an airplane who knew their plane had been hijacked.  They knew from cell phone reports that the twin towers had been hit.  They knew an attack was taking place.  They knew their plane was most likely going to be used to destroy another important target.  What did they do?  They acted as a militia and banded together to prevent more lives lost.  They sacrificed their own lives to protect and defend their country.

According to Wikipedia, the definition of militia is as follows:  The term militia is commonly used today to refer to a military force composed of ordinary citizens to provide defense, emergency law enforcement, or paramilitary service, in times of emergency without being paid a regular salary or committed to a fixed term of service.

That fits what they did very nicely.

The next time someone tells you that a citizen militia is not a necessary thing in these United States of America that we love, point this out to them and watch their minds change before your very eyes.

God bless you, and God bless America!

NRA Women's Leadership Forum

Greetings,

This past Saturday, I had a wonderful opportunity to attend the first Colorado meeting of the NRA Women's Leadership Forum.  We met at a lovely venue, the Wellshire Inn of Denver, a quaint castle-type structure with tons of character.  There were about 25 of us present, and we were privileged to hear Sandy Froman, Past President of NRA and current board member of both NRA and NRA Foundation.  She was pleasant and easy to listen to.  We all greatly enjoyed hearing her personal tale of how she went from being a liberal to a gun-loving conservative.  Someone attempted to break into her house, and she decided not to be victimized.  She pointed out that many liberals are really conservatives who have not yet been mugged.  :)

According to their literature, the NRA Women's Leadership Forum 'unites women of influence to defend Second Amendment freedoms and help secure the future of the NRA through philanthropic leadership'.  There were five of us who are part of the Colorado Friends of NRA program, and it was a great opportunity for us to have a ladies afternoon out and fellowship with each other.  Anne Draper, a member of the Women's Leadership Council, and the organizer of the event, did a tremendous job and made the luncheon quite enjoyable.  We all agreed that the word-of-mouth that will follow this event should make our next event much larger.  We are all looking forward to it already.

We are compiling an email mailing list of any interested women.  Please send me your contact information if you'd like to be included in the updates for future events.  gchermack@nrahq.org
